What is LED light therapy and how does it work?

LED, which stands for light emitting diode, is a type of light that has been around since the ‘60s but only recently has its ability to heal the skin been fully realised.

LED phototherapy, or light therapy as it is often called, can at first seem like a strange way to reduce the signs of ageing as we’re so used to light and sun exposure damaging the skin, but light has a host of benefits too. It helps our bodies produce vitamin D, provides energy and serotonin and the right type of light can accelerate the skin’s natural repair processes.

The key differences between damaging and beneficial light are the type or spectrum of light and the amount our skin is exposed to. Unlike UV, controlled levels of red, blue and near infrared light are clinically proven to be beneficial to the skin.

Light therapy treatment exposes the skin to controlled, low levels of these beneficial lights from both the visible and infrared part of the light spectrum. The exposure energises cellular functions; cells that are energised function better and regenerate faster which results in younger, healthier and radiant skin.

Our Dermaflex Lux phototherapy treatments are non invasive, painless and proven to treat a range of skin conditions, rejuvenate the skin naturally and in the process increase serotonin – so you can make the most of a natural antidepressant while reinvigorating the skin.

By using different wavelengths of light, each of which penetrate the skin at different depths, the skin is helped to heal naturally.

Tan in the City’s Dermalux Flex is the only tri wave LED therapy available in Ponsonby, Auckland, and can be used for the face and body.

Red, blue and near light: natural skin healing

While LED phototherapy is now used widely, the latest technology is tri wave therapy, which combines the powerful trio of red, blue and near light to offer enhanced skin benefits and lasting results without the use of chemicals or invasive treatments.

Here’s a breakdown of the benefits of the different lights, each of which can be used on their own or simultaneously with our Dermalux Flex treatments depending on your specific needs.

Red light therapy: the powerful anti-ageing skin treatment

Great skin doesn’t happen by chance, but it can happen quickly with the right phototherapy treatments. Dermalux instantly energises skin cells to revitalise a dull or tired complexion, but a course of treatment will have long-lasting results. Rejuvenating Red Light 633nm increases metabolic energy and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis to stimulate cell renewal, boost collagen and elastin production and increase hydration, which makes it ideal for restoring vitality, smoothing lines and natural skin healing.

A breakdown of red light benefits:

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis
  • Improves skin texture and tone
  • Accelerates cell renewal
  • Reduces fine lines
  • Increases natural skin hydration
  • Increases blood circulation and oxygenation
  • Stimulates lymphatic system
  • Restores optimum cell function

Auckland acne treatment: blue light therapy for skin clarity

If you’re struggling with acne, have spot prone skin or breakouts, blue light therapy is a quick and effective way to transform your skin naturally. Blue light 415nm is a blemish fighting light that destroys the bacteria which causes spots and improves skin clarity without irritation, and it has the added benefit of having a calming effect for problem skin conditions.

A breakdown of blue light benefits:

  • Anti-bacterial action without irritation
  • Helps blemish prone skin
  • Improves skin clarity
  • Helps to regulate oil production
  • Calming effect for problem skin
  • Ideal combination anti-bacterial treatment

Near infrared (NIR) light: the calming effect

Regenerating Near Infrared Light (NIR) 830nm offers advanced rejuvenation benefits, calms redness and irritation and helps to reduce pigmentation.

A breakdown of NIR light benefits:

  • Advanced skin rejuvenation benefits
  • Calms redness and irritation
  • Modulates inflammatory response
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation
  • Promotes integrity and healthy skin
  • Accelerates post treatment healing
  • Ideal for the most sensitive skin
  • Triggers blood flow increasing oxygenation to reduce inflammation
  • Stimulates macrophages and lymphocytes for detoxification
  • Down regulates MMP-1 for firming and collagen production
  • Regulates melanin production via tyrosinase suppression to reduce pigmentation
  • Neutrophils increase superoxide dismutase (powerful antioxidants)
  • Increase skin health and immunity to pathogens

Used individually or in combination, these three different lights can offer transformative skin results. Here’s some of the latest findings about the effectiveness of LED phototherapy and light combinations:

*                 NIR light can increase cell regeneration by up to 200% (Dr H Whelan et al, 2001)

*                 Red & NIR light can improve periorbital wrinkles by up to 75% (Russel et al 2005)

*                 Red & NIR can improve skin texture & smoothness by up to 79% (Neil S Sadick 2008)

*                 Red & NIR light can increase skin elasticity by 36% (Lee et al, 2007)

*                 NIR light can significantly reduce redness and flushing (Lee et al, 2007)

*                 Blue & Red light can improve spots and blemishes by 76% (A Chu et al, 2002)

The targeted healing power of LED light therapy by Dermalux is both a luxury and a medically certified treatment for skin conditions including psoriasis, acne and rosacea and a highly effective rejuvenator to achieve youthful, glowing skin.

How to treat Psoriasis naturally: before and after results with light therapy

NIR light has advanced skin rejuvenation benefits. It works by triggering blood flow, which increases oxygen to reduce inflammation. This light is ideal for all skin types, but especially those with poor healing or low immunity including psoriasis. By promoting healing, over time NIR light increases skin health and immunity to pathogens.

Used in combination with red light that accelerates cell renewal and blue light that produces a calming effect, tri wave light therapy is highly effective for psoriasis treatment.

Psoriasis before and after a total of 10 Dermalux treatments with combined NIR, blue and red light: two sessions per week for three weeks, followed by one per week for four weeks.

Light therapy for rosacea treatment

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and sometimes bumps and visible blood vessels, often in the face. While there is no accepted cure for rosacea, LED phototherapy is a highly effective treatment.

NIR light is proven to calm redness and irritation, to reduce hyperpigmentation and is ideal for the most sensitive skin types. Used as treatment for rosacea, it has proven results; the light is absorbed by chromophores in the cell membrane and triggers blood flow increasing oxygenation to reduce inflammation. Over a treatment course, it regulates melanin production via tyrosinase suppression, for clients concerned with pigmentation, and detoxifies the skin. It promotes skin healing and is a proven non invasive, painless treatment for rosacea.

Using combined NIR and red light, the before and after shots here show rosacea treatment results after a total of ten Dermalux phototherapy treatments over a period of three weeks.

Effective dermatitis treatment

LED light therapy is also well known for its efficacy in treating dermatitis. Using tri wave light (blue, red and NIR), results can be achieved quickly and painlessly.

Using combined red, blue and NIR light the before and after images here show Dermalux dermatitis treatment results after seven sessions in the first two weeks and one session per week for the following three weeks.

FaQs: Everything you need to know about Dermalux Flex tri wave LED light therapy

What can I expect when I have LED light therapy?

Expect to feel relaxed! Tri wave phototherapy naturally increases the production of serotonin, so it acts as a natural antidepressant or mood enhancer. The therapy is non invasive, painless and soothing. If treating the face, you’ll need to remove makeup and wear specially designed goggles to protect your eyes. During the treatment, you’ll lie under the light for either 20 or 30 minutes. The light will feel slightly warm but not hot.

Once completed, there are no side effects or pain. You may notice slight redness in the skin for a few minutes but this will reduce quickly post treatment. Make up can be reapplied immediately following treatment.

Depending on your treatment plan, we may recommend the use of pre and post treatment products including specially formulated peptides and moisturisers to enhance the results.

How long does treatment last?

Depending on your skin type and individual treatment plan, you can expect individual treatments to last between 20 and 30 minutes. Treatments must be at least 24 hours apart and the generally recommended number of treatments in a single course is 3-6 for optimum results.

How many treatments do I need?

After one treatment, you can expect to see instant results. Your skin will feel radiant, redness and irritation will be calmed and you’ll notice improvement in hydration and tone which will continue over the course of a few days.

For the best results, a course of treatment is the preferred option as results are cumulative and last for a number of months. With regular maintenance treatments following an initial course in close succession, your skin’s health and appearance will improve.

Are there any side effects of LED light therapy?

Dermalux Flex treats without trauma. There are no known side effects and it is safe for all skin types, including tanned skin. There is no pain, no downtime and it is medically certified for the treatment of a range of skin conditions.
